Dune Behavior 7-15-21

Basicaly, last year's high water eroded the base of the dunes, now we are seeing the upper dune adjust to it's new, smaller base. The clay layer slows down the process but it continues to find its' new equilibrum. This will continue for some time.

Here you can see large blocks of clay on the beach, that have calved from the clay layer near the top of the picture

this is just clay and water from a seep, that make the interesting patterns

This is a clay collapse that made it all the way to the waterline.
This shows a gap in the clay layer and the perched sand above, is funneling through the gap.  As the water washes away the sand at the waterline, the sand above will continue to funnel down.  You can't stop gravity.

This shot shows the same process but a bit more defined.

the making of a sunset

Cold front passing.....the making of a sunset

This series is shots of a cold front  passing just before sunset.  Video would have been more interesting, but if you look at the change in each picture, you get the idea.
In a frontal passage like this, the wedge of cold air, close to the ground, forces the warmer, moist air up. This creates the visible cloud.

   The start.

The upper cloud is the warm air and the lower one is the cold front
The color change in the cloud now is because of the sun angle.

Looking at the back side, after the passage

and finally we end up with a sunset...
This whole sequence, covered about 15 minutes.  It was great fun watching it progress.

Petes Woods, May 23.2020

Several of you have asked for directions to Pete's Woods

From the corner of M-22 and Joyfield Road, turn East (left), go about 4 or 5 miles. Just past the Blaine Church turn South (right) on Swamp Road. About a mile in, the parking lot is marked and on your right

The Woods is a pocket of old growth timber in a gently rolling terrain.
   Enjoy the woods...Jay
